Look at those toes wiggle !!! When Willy gets excited about a presentation, especially if worms are involved, he jumps about and the long toes on his back feet tap and wiggle.
Gabe Brown of Bismark, North Dakota, understands the mechanisms of soil biology and farming. Enhancing the soil depth with organic matter from the roots of cover crops reduces the needs for herbicides and synthetic fertilizers.
As cover crop roots grow into deeper soil levels old roots die and new ones grow increasing the organic content along with the penetration of rain water flowing into soil pores and root channels. Soil micro organisms feed on the organic residue and are able to cycle nutrients to the crop roots and increase the availability of these nutrients.
Cover crops help build healthy soil with mycorrhizal fungi forming symbiotic relationships with the roots of plants and increase water and nutrient absorption, storage and availability. Above the soil surface cover crop foliage insulates soil surface, shielding it from the summer sun which keeps more moisture in the soil by reducing evaporation.
