The New-York Historical Society and NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York, have partnered to produce a special series of one minute videos that feature the staff of the New York Historical Society as they answer some of the most captivating questions ever posed to them about the City's fascinating and unique history. Opened in 1905, the Hipprodrome, on Sixth Avenue between 43rd and 44th streets, was willed as the largest theater in the world, seating 5200 with a stage twelve times larger than any Broadway counterpart. Unfortunately, large crowds were offset by high operating costs and the growing popularity of motion pictures over live performances. The theater was eventually razed in 1939.
