SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTION - Common Core - English Language - Writing - Sentence Structures ( compound and complex) SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTION is a word, which connects a dependent clause (containing a subject and verb but cannot stand alone) to an independent clause, the main sentence structure. Words like - ALTHOUGH, BECAUSE, IF, THAN are always subordinate conjunctions. They will always introduce a clause that modifies or describes something in another independent clause. (e.g., I can't reach the cookie jar because I am too short.) Some subordinate conjunctions such as AFTER, SINCE, BEFORE, UNTIL, FOR, can also be prepositions but the difference is determined by what kind of structure follows that SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTION. (e.g., AFTER I get the cookies, I will call you.) The dependent clause modifies or describes something in the main sentence structure and the little word AFTER connects the two. Subordinate clauses can be adjective, adverbs, or nouns but they are always connected with a subordinate conjunction or relative pronoun. In the combination AS...AS, the first AS is an adverb describing the following element, and the second AS is a subordinate conjunction introducing the dependent clause which describes the adverb. (e.g., HE ate as fast as I.) THAN is always part of a comparative combination and introduces the dependent clause describing WORSE, MORE, LESS, or the ---ER word which is always combined with THAN. (e.g., He was slower than ever. They were faster than we.)
