http://www.virtualfarmtours.ca A Canadian dairy farmer explains what he feeds his cows. Transcript: (Tie stall dairy farm) Tyler-We start with a corn silage, they've already got that. I go around the barn and feed some rolled corn. It's all set up by a nutritionist, a dairy ruminant nutritionist is what it is. This is a protein supplement. It's what balances the ration to make it nutritionally sound. It's got all the vitamins and minerals in it, as well as the essential protein that is needed to enhance milk production. And the reason I'm feeding this individually, why I don't just mix it all together and feed it as one feed is I can feed each cow separately and that means the cows that are giving more milk I can give more of different feeds to, to make her ration balance for the amount of milk she is giving. This is the dry hay that I would feed the cows. What I do is that I feed, I alternate, I feed this one night. Usually in the mornings I'll feed dry hay and at nights after milking I'll feed baleage. So this will be the baleage I was talking about. It's the same as the hay -- it's the same crop, it was just baled before it was dry in the field and then that made for a high moisture feed. Cows have access to clean fresh water at all times. They just push this little lever with their nose and it makes the bowl fill up with water and then they can drink all they want.
