Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes one's immune system to mistakenly attack and weaken itself. With RA, the malfunction of the immune system particularly affects the synovial membranes that line joints, causing pain and discomfort that may eventually lead to permanent bone damage. Many doctors believe genetics may play a role in the development of RA, and researchers have identified several possible viruses and bacteria that start a similar immune response that may be linked to the disease. Age and sex are also possible variables in the development of RA, as 75% of the 1.3 million Americans diagnosed with the disease are female and most cases occur in men and women between ages 40 and 60. Other autoimmune diseases include lupus, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Talk to your doctor about your symptoms for an accurate diagnosis.
