VELLORE: Compassion is the word that inspires medical aspirants to burn midnight oil to don the apron of a doctor one day and set forth on a life dedicated to curing the ill and the frail. However, when it comes to animals, some medicos seem to be short of any compassion, as the second such incident in recent times suggests.
Four students of Christian Medical College (CMC) at Vellore were suspended on Wednesday by the administration for allegedly torturing a monkey to death on campus.
Jasper Samuel Sahoo, Rohit Kumar Yenukotti, Arun Loui Sasikumar and Alex Chekalayil - from different batches - were suspended for the brutal act. Confirming the suspension, principal of the CMC Anna Pulimood told Express that the college would not condone any such act.
“The internal committee inquiry found the four students guilty. We are looking at and dealing with it seriously," the principal said, adding that they were ready to fully cooperate with investigators. The incident came to light when Azar, an animal activist based in Mumbai, got a call from one of the college students, who claimed that a money was tortured and killed by medical students on Saturday.
The carcass was buried behind the hostel mess. Azar alerted Chennai-based animal activists, who lodged a complaint against four students with the Bagayam police.
A case was registered against the four accused college students and they would be arrested on Thursday. Animal rights activist Nishant Ravi told Express that the monkey carcass was exhumed. "Autopsy revealed that the animal's neck, hands and legs were tied up with a wire. We observed fractures in the monkey’s knee, neck and ankle, indicating it underwent cruelty. The worst part was that the neck was stabbed with the sharp object.
The wound had both entry and exit marks, pointing towards the sharp object penetrating from behind and coming out from the front of the neck,” he added. Director of CMC Sunil Chandy said that they had issued stringent warning to all the students. "We are shocked with the incident. Our college has an animal-friendly campus.
It will continue to remain one," he reiterated. A few months ago, two medical students landed in the soup after a video of their torturing a puppy and throwing it off a terrace became viral on social networking sites. The dog was later rescued by animal rights activists and administered care.
