Cerro Armazones Mountain, Atacama Region, Chile. The European Southern Observatory blasted over a million tonnes of rock from the top of this 10,000 foot mountain to level a site for what will be the world's largest telescope. The peak of Cerro Armazones was levelled to create space for the European Extremely Large Telescope, which will capture sharper images than the Hubble Space Telescope. The new telescope will be situated near Paranal Observatory. Construction work started in June 2014. euronews knowledge brings you a fresh mix of the world's most interesting know-hows, directly from space and sci-tech experts.
