EPISODE 5 OF VR CITY TOURS: STEPANAKERT  | A NEW VR CITY TOUR EPISODE EVERY TUESDAY Stepanakert, Karabakh’s rather inadvertent capital, is a bustling and prosperous place spread out along a steep hillside over the distant Karkar River. Despite a recent construction boom, there's still plenty of the town's Soviet heritage visible, as well as many rambling, typically Caucasian family homes. Little different in many ways from a typical medium-sized Armenian town, its unusual position as the capital of a breakaway republic means that it's an interesting place to explore, and with more infrastructure than anywhere else in the region, it makes a good base for trips to the rest of Karabakh.

The political status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. Since 1991, it has been largely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent entity. The region, however, is internationally recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan, although it has not exercised power over most of the region since 1991. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.
