Leeds and The Wardrobe's original salsa and Latin music promoters since the venue opened in 1999, Lubi Jovanovic and Fabio Bahia, launch their new regular live salsa and Latin music session Viva La Musica with TWO live bands.
A night of live salsa and Cuban music with some special guests from London plus Leeds' top Cuban son band and DJ support from the north's top selectors....
Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Cafe are the small 7 piece London based Colombian salsa band with the big sound. With 4 CDs to their name since 1996 plus many international salsa appearances across Europe, they are one of the few bands who drop the standard 4 piece salsa horn section for the unique sound of the vibraphone (vibes). The vibes was made popular in mambo, salsa and Latin jazz since the 1950s by the likes of Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, Louie Ramirez and New Swing Sextet. Sexteto Cafe have appeared at The Wardrobe many times since 1999 though it's been 2 years since their last visit. They play dancer friendly Puerto Rican and Colombian salsa with a touch of mambo....new album coming soon!
Tarantismo, led by tres player Matt Hurt (the tres is a Cuban 3 stringed guitar), are the Leeds based band who play the traditional music of Cuba, the son, which is the roots of salsa music. If you like Ruben Gonzalez, Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo and Buena Vista Social Club, you will love Tarantismo. However, this is a young band so expect the traditional son sound of those legendary Cuban artists to be a little heavier, hotter and with plenty of salsa flavour.
Salsa DJs/co-promoters Lubi Jovanovic and Fabio Bahia have been working together since 1996 here in Leeds and the north of England. They run all of the region's finest salsa, Cuban, Brasilian and Latin parties including Calle Ocho, Cubanito, Hola Colombia, Made In Brasil (all Leeds) and Salsa Social in Manchester. They are also the north's main live salsa/Brasilian/Latin music promoters of the last decade with gigs including La Excelencia, La-33, Seu Jorge, Orishas, Salsa Celtica, Johnny Polance, Asere, Oguerre and Joer Bataan, to name a few.
Guest salsa DJ is DJ Monntunno, born in Colombia but resident in the UK for many years and based in Newcastle. He is the main man in the north east and co-promoter and resident DJ at the annual Newcastle Salsa Congressess.
Tickets are £10 and available from www.seetickets.com - www.lunatickets.co.uk - Jumbo Records (0113 245 5570 and www.jumborecords.co.uk) - Crash Records (0113 243 6743 and www.crashrecords.co.uk)
After this launch, the promoters will feature regular live salsa, Cuban and Latin bands every season and hope to get the love of watching, listening and dancing to live salsa and Latin music back again.........in the end, without the musicians and live music, there would be no salsa dancing.......VIVA LA MUSICA!
