Georg Philipp Telemann was born on 14 March 1681 in Magdeburg, the capital of Duchy of Magdeburg, Brandenburg-Prussia. He is a German Baroque composer and a multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family’s wishes. He held important positions in big cities of Germany before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city’s five main churches. He is one of the most prolific composers in history, compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach and to George Frideric Handel.
Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G major is a monumental composition because it is considered as the first concerto ever written for viola, composed between 1716 and 1721, as well as the only Baroque concerto for the instrument. In the whole concerto, Telemann makes use of the full range of the viola known at that time, blending it harmoniously with the string orchestra. The concerto has four movements: Largo, Allegro, Andante and Presto.
