EMSA is in charge of the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service in the frame of the Copernicus Security Service. Its functions are to :
- perform fisheries control (monitor fishing grounds, cages, farm and ports),
- maritime safety and security (search and rescue operations, safety of navigation and ship to ship transfer)
- provide support to customs (detection of suspicious vessels), marine environment monitoring (detection of illegal oil discharges) -
and to enforce law when necessary.
In order to achieve such goals, EMSA has developed an Integrated Maritime Service (IMS) which integrates a wide range of maritime data from various sources including CMEMS data.
Various parameters such as surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents and sea level height from CMEMS ocean model including 10-day forecast are ingested into the EMSA IMS tool in order to increase its monitoring capacity.
