The Wuhan Institute of Virology is at the centre of a rift between two superpowers - the USA and China - over the origins of coronavirus.

Donald Trump and top US officials have repeatedly claimed they’ve seen evidence linking the coronavirus pandemic to a Wuhan laboratory.

Their claims appear to be based on a private analysis of cellphone location data, which showed no cellphone activity in a high-security portion of the institute’s laboratory between October 7th and 24th. It’s led to speculation about a lab shutdown that might’ve been caused by a “hazardous event”.

But the report cites no direct evidence for the institute’s involvement, and even the CIA say it’s probably not to blame, so what’s behind Donald Trump’s accusation?

Could it be a strategy to deflect from the growing US death toll - now the highest in the world? Or is it an attempt to strengthen the US bargaining position in future trade talks with China?
