United States Navy SEAL special forces have special expertise to infiltrate and attack positions of warships or important military installations of the enemy on land and on the coast. SEAL forces are usually launched from nuclear submarines waiting miles from the target, using the Seal Delivery Vehicle underwater vehicle to its destination. SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) Mk.8 Mod 0 is the vehicle, a small, silent mini submarine that can transport SEAL troops to its destination, reports Popular Mechanics. SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) Mk.8 Mod 0, also known as Mark 8 or "Gator Class" - named after James "Gator" Parks, retired SEALs and engineers who are powerful drivers of SDV development. SDV allows SEAL (short for Sea, Water, Land) to infiltrate calmly through dark sea waters, landing right under the enemy's nose. The Gator SDV is a mini submarine designed to carry six to eight SEAL commandos and their equipment. Two SEAL members sat in the front - the driver and navigator, with four to six passengers behind him. There are storage containers for mission equipment located on both sides, besides that SDV also transports up to eight Mark.5 Limpet Assembly Module (LAM) mines. Limpet mines are small bombs designed to magnetically attach to the ship's steel hull and will explode to pierce the hull, which will damage or sink enemy ships. Unlike most underwater vehicles that use electric power or diesel, SDV uses an electric motor from a battery for its propulsion system. The electric motor drives a single propeller with a speed of around six knots. This small submarine's silence allows it to escape passive sonar system detection. SEAL uses the Gator underwater vehicle for a number of sea-based missions. Gliding from a nuclear submarine or an aircraft carrier, a small group of SEAL troops can sneak into the enemy coastline and then carry out reconnaissance missions or invade the land. Alternately they can sneak through enemy defenses, park SDVs outside enemy ports, and then proceed one by one to plant mines in the enemy hull. Mark 8 is used by the US Navy and British Special Boat Service commandos. Introduced in the 1980s, the Gators had served throughout the Cold War and were in the process of being replaced by a new underwater vehicle, Mk 11.
