It really doesn't make a difference. If your child prefers the regular underwear with characters on it, then you want to go with that. If your child likes the feel and the look of the training pants, then he can wear those. It really depends on what your child likes. Typically, the regular underwear have a character or colors, or numbers that really appeal to children, and if that's the case, then that's what you want to use for your child. If you're going to be doing some traveling and you need a little bit of extra protection, then you can go with the training pants. But it really depends on what your child prefers. It's also helpful if you get underwear or training pants that are a size too big. That allows the child to pull his pants up and down on his own, a little bit more easily. Whether you choose underwear or training pants, it's really important that your child wear one of them full-time and not a diaper anymore.
