UL Environment helps support the growth and development of sustainable products, services and organizations in the global marketplace through standards development, educational services, and independent third party assessment and certification.
At the same time the sustainable products manufacturing industry was gaining momentum, Underwriters Laboratories Inc.® began to have conversations with some of its customers about the need for independent claims validation, certification to standards and even the establishment of sustainability standards across numerous industries.
Just as with product safety, where Underwriters Laboratories got its start 115 years ago, manufacturers were saying they wanted standards and trusted evidence they had met the standards.
The reality is that most manufacturers of sustainable products are in it for the right reasons: they want to "be green," not just "be seen as being green." What they needed is an independent, trusted source who could provide clarity for the validation of claims and certification to standards as they evolved. Thus, the concept for UL Environment was born.
But while UL Environment leverages the UL global infrastructure, it has been launched as a wholly owned subsidiary under the UL family of companies for one reason: flexibility. Sustainability as a manufacturing concept is in its infancy and we recognize the need to adapt as fast as our customers do.
