But human rights groups argue they are actually mass detention camps, aimed an indoctrination and forcing people to renounce their faith. Up to one million people, mostly Uighurs, are thought to be held, but ethnic Kazakhs are also suffering from the consequences of the crackdown. Meanwhile, a severe drought in western Afghanistan has displaced thousands of farmers. The weather is a devastating blow to livelihoods that were already threatened by decades of conflict. And since August 2017, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled a crackdown in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The United Nations has described the violence as "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide".
