A strong typhoon has struck the Philippines, forcing tens of thousands from their homes amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Typhoon Vongfong (locally known as Ambo) hit the archipelago with winds of up to 155 kilometres per hour.

More than 500 families have been evacuated to temporary shelters, which are operating to only half of their capacity to prevent a new outbreak of COVID-19.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said the country “cannot afford a second or third wave to happen”, and has urged people to follow safeguards as he plans on easing lockdown measures in some parts of the nation.

The Philippines recorded more than 11,000 confirmed infections, with over 700 deaths.
