The Ultimate Warrior was one of pro wrestling's greatest stars. Yet for some reason, he disappeared with no explanation around the peak of his WWF/WWE fame after Summerslam 1991. He returned later to rescue Hulk Hogan at the end of Wrestlemania 8 in 1992. However, many people believed that this Ultimate Warrior was portrayed by a different person, including suspects such as Kerry Von Erich and Jim Powers.
There were a number of reasons for people believing the urban legend that there were two Ultimate Warriors in WWF. For starters, Warrior's disappearance was out of nowhere, and with little explanation. To many, this smelled like a cover up. Many thought the original Ultimate Warrior died, and they quietly brought in a replacement. Kerry Von Erich had also disappeared around the same time.
The legend also persisted because Jim Hellwig had legally changed his name to Warrior, causing some people to think Jim Hellwig and the man legally named Warrior were two different people. Then there was also the case of Renegade, the WCW character brought in as Hulk Hogan's "Ultimate Surprise," an attempt by WCW to make fans think The Ultimate Warrior was coming.
