Kobane is the site of tense battles Saturday, with fighting between the self-proclaimed 'Islamic State' (IS) and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, the People's Protection Units (YPG). Despite the raging battles, Turkish troops can only watch from their border positions.
The Turkish parliament authorised cross-border military operations in Iraq and Syria to fight IS Thursday , which the Syrian government have condemned, stating any incursions into their territory will be considered a violation of their sovereignty. Reportedly, the Turkish government want the US-led forces to establish a no-fly zone over Syrian territory before engaging in any operations in Syrian territory.
In the political stalemate, the predominately Kurdish town is at risk of falling to IS militants. The situation has drawn the ire of protesters across the world, with protests building momentum in Europe for governments to arm the Kurds to tackle the militants.
