We invite you to the first episode of TulipTV, a new infotainment show for the Dutch community in Canada and for people worldwide who are interested in the vibrant cultural and business relationships between Canada and the Netherlands. How was the great friendship between Canada and the Netherlands established? We show you an excerpt of the film "Canada and the Liberation of the Netherlands" by Lance Goddard, who travelled around Canada and The Netherlands to collect voices of World War II veterans. The excerpts are courtesy of Lance Goddard and CanWest. The entire DVD is for sale, e.g. at http://www.amazon.ca/Canada-Liberation-Netherlands-May-1945/dp/1550025473. Did you know that the Netherlands are Canada's second largest trading partner? And that Canada has more than 1 million inhabitants who are of Dutch descent? One of our colleagues was in Ottawa and met the Ambassador Wim Geerts for a spontaneous interview! Monday April 30th is Queen's day, our "Koniginnedag"! Did you know that Princess Margriet, the third daughter of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard and the sister of the Queen Beatrix, was born in Canada? The Princess was born in Ottawa, Ontario, as the family had been living in Canada since June 1940 after the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany. The maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital in which Princess Margriet was born was temporarily declared to be extra-territorial by the Canadian government. Making the maternity ward outside of the Canadian domain caused it to be unaffiliated with any jurisdiction and technically international territory. This was done to ensure that the newborn Princess would derive her citizenship from her mother only, thus making her solely Dutch. Too bad we cannot be in the Netherlands this April, but here is for you a beautiful documentary "The Netherlands and the House of Orange" about the history of our Royal family. We can show you the film courtesy of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Don't forget: if you like the show, you can help us by following us on https://www.facebook.com/TulipTV, twitter: @TulipTVshow & youtube and by spreading the word in an old-fashioned way: talk to your friends!
