Latest from the world of tropics for November 7, 2019
Cyclone Bulbul was finally designated by the Indian Meteorological Department earlier today, amidst confusion about whether it would retain the precursor storm's name Matmo, whose energy survived into the Bay of Bengal this week. Bulbul is expected to move towards the northwest before curving back northeast, with an uncertain outcome for the coast of northeastern India and Bangladesh. Some models forecast the storm to move inland, potentially with hurricane force winds, whilst others depict it stalling off the coast and turning around. With time, this forecast will become more clear.
Tropical Depression Maha has weakened substantially, and barely contains winds of 30mph at this stage. However, the storm could still deliver up to 150mm of rainfall to parts of western India as it turns back on itself late this week.
Tropical Storm Nakri is blowing up significant amounts of convection today in the South China Sea, although none of its effects are reaching the Philippines or Vietnam at this time. The storm is expected to start to move towards the west soon, and could become a typhoon.
Typhoon Halong continues to put up a fight befitting of its former status today, well away from any land areas and curving out to sea. The storm will gradually weaken as it accelerates northeastwards.
