Two very cute boys (Ramallo and Manuel) and a girl in the Spanish Civil War are involved in the death of two other boys. One was killed and the other committed suicide. It's a tragic secret that will be with them for all their lives. Years pass and they meet in a hospital for tuberculosis treatment. The girl is now a nun, Ramallo is a thief and openly homosexual and Manuel is secretly a homosexual but obsessed with religion. Through Ramallo, both Manuel and the girl are brought to the reality that homosexuality can lead to a higher standard and plain of living. Both of their lives are quite literally destroyed by Christianity and both of them are miserable about the lives religion has led to and find religion to have failed them. Ramallo, is not someone who is out to convert other homosexuals, his life, although much more free and satisfied, has been hard for him to endure, and like his companions, he has been driven to do and be facets of our mortal existence he would not have been involved in had he not been maliciously wronged by religion. He is a living breathing example of what could have been a more decent, loving and moral person, if religious authority hadn't fucked him over so bad. Still, he is far more moral and acts with greater goodness and compassion. Above then the deceit, corruption and hate that has been the general experience of Manuel and the girl in a life devoted to God. This was a very scandalous film when it was released but for the most part, it doesn't fall outside the norm of modern LGBT cinema. Still, it's a great film, very sexy and philosophically sound. Worth seeing if you can still find copies of it.
