Tips Request: How To Clean A Mouse Pad?

I've seen some videos and articles, and they recommend doing things that actually destroy mouse pads, so I'm wondering if anyone has good ideas on how to clean them without damaging the sides or bottom. Note: I've never spilled a drink on my pad, but apparently people do that, so ... we might need tips for them too, like "don't spill drinks on the mouse pad" maybe. :D Thanks!
