A new study shows that tree shrews are the only known non-human mammal to deliberately seek out spicy food. A mutation in their mouths' pain receptors makes them less sensitive to the spicy chemical in chili peppers. Scientists say that the mutation is an evolutionary adaptation to expand the range of the tree shrew’s diet.
