The story of UR began on November 3rd, 1963 when the former National University of Rwanda opened its doors with about fifty-three students in the faculties of Medicine, Social Sciences and Normale Supérieure (which was focusing on education) under the aegis of the Canadian Dominican Father Georges-Henri Lévesque.
Jump forward to today—five decades later—The university of Rwanda has transformed from only three faculties and one campus to become home of six colleges with 269 academic programmes (186 undergraduate, 83 postgraduate). UR is now home to around 27,500 undergraduate students, 1500 postgraduate students, over 2,500 staff as well as over 80,000 alumni.
