On Tuesday 21st of January, the US reported its first case of coronavirus, the new and potentially deadly virus originating in China.
A Washington state resident in his 30s contracted the virus while in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the outbreak first began.
US officials stressed that the risk to the American public is very low, and that this is “not a moment for panic or high anxiety”.
The man, originally from central China, felt ill with fever and a cough a few days after landing at the Seattle-Tacoma airport. The hospital that is treating him said the man is in isolation and under monitoring, and that they are tracking down people who might have come into contact with him.
The new respiratory coronavirus has now been confirmed in more than 400 people in China, but the real figure could be much higher.
Some airports in the US are now screening passengers coming from the city of Wuhan, where preventative measures have been implemented.
There have been cases reported in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has convened today to discuss whether to declare a global emergency.
