Audio on a ZoomH2 - nothing added. About Tim Pence: Tim Pence is a composer and performer who utilizes various disciplines to manifest what is ultimately one art. Composing in different formats and performing with various styles and instruments each have unique roles in expressing the emotions and principles in Pence's art. Against the technological trend of hyper-specialization Mr. Pence stands with a desire for breadth. Tim originally came to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory of Music where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in classical guitar performance. His principle teacher in these studies was classical guitarist and composer David Leisner. During this time Mr. Pence received First Place at the 1996 New England Classical Guitar Competition of the Boston Classical Guitar Society. Also during his four years at NEC he played in masterclasses given by Benjamin Verdery, Jason Vieaux and Ricardo Iznaola, sat in on lessons given by Eliot Fisk, and studied composition and orchestration formally and informally with Lee Hyla, David Leisner and others. In 2001 Mr. Pence founded Centerline, which is both a philosophical concept as well as a musical ensemble. As a composer Mr. Pence has recently had the privilege of writing for the Triton Brass Quintet, currently Artists in Residence at Boston College. "In the Monkey Brain... and other stories" is a massive piece that is at times dark, virtuosic, funny, and only occasionally scholastic. Mr. Pence's next composition will be a set of three pieces for electric guitar, amplified tuba, and drum set ad libitum.
