Nobel Prize winning professor Dr. Robert Lefkowitz delivers his keynote address at the 2013 North Carolina Student Academy of Science conference held at NC School of Science and Math. Lefkowitz and Dr. Brian Kobilka, a former postdoctoral fellow at Duke who worked under Lefkowitz, received the Nobel Prize for their research on G-protein coupled protein receptors, research which has led to major advancements in the development of prescription drugs for a variety of issues ranging from allergies to coronary disease. This keynote address, entitled "The Reluctant Scientist," explores Lefkowitz's journey through childhood, medicine, and science, and the lessons he learned that got him to where he is today. This lecture is hosted by the N.C. Student Academy of Science, a state-wide science education organization for students in grades 6-12, in alliance with the North Carolina Academy of Science that provides opportunities for students to share their research through competition. NCSSM, a publicly funded high school in North Carolina, provides exciting, high-level STEM learning opportunities.
