The Great Migration changed America, and painter Jacob Lawrence told the story in pictures. His Migration Series series of paintings became famous in the 1940s. Now the story is told in music as well by Derek Bermel, composer of the Migration Series Jazz Concerto. The work was performed in 2013 by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Rossen Milanov, as part of a Princeton-wide celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
