The Future USS Indianapolis (Littoral Combat Ship 17) Christening

The Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) team has reached another milestone with the christening of LCS 17, the future USS INDIANAPOLIS. The tradition of christening a ship goes back centuries and is believed to bring good luck and safe travel to the vessel. At the christening ceremony, the ship sponsor breaks a bottle of champagne against the bow. Jill Truitt Donnelly, who is a native Hoosier, wife of Senator Joe Donnelly, and the daughter of two World War II veterans, is the ship sponsor of LCS 17.
