The End Of Podium Girls In Cycling? | The GCN Show Ep. 265

This week, we discuss whether cycling should call time on podium girls, plus another twit is banned for using a motor in a bicycle race. Slightly less controversially, we’ve got new bikes, lights and brakes in tech of the week, and tell you exactly how less pressure helped Wout Van Aert trounce Mathieu Van Der Poel at the cyclocross worlds. He was just loads better wasn’t he? This week in the world of cycling, we learned that winter bike commuting in areas with real winters is gathering momentum. The annual winter bike to work day in Chicago was bigger than ever, although I’m not surprised seeing as all participants gathered in a park and ate cheesecake. This week was also learnt that in San Francisco you can find yourself an uber, but then you might have to pedal it. More on that a little later. We also learnt that cycling is behind the times, in more ways than this year’s Kuurne Brussels Kuurne poster, depicting a Napoleonic Peter Sagan wearing white tights. Which are now cool, remember? Anyway, the “sport” of darts and also Formula 1 have been hitting the headlines over the last couple of weeks. The reason? They have decided to call an end to the so called glamour girls who walk the players on, or in the case of Formula 1, the grid girls who stand with an umbrella next to the drivers, amongst other things. Many have welcomed the news, others have said that it’s political correctness gone mad, and some, including former grid girls, have gone as far as to say that it’s anti feminist - effectively preventing a number of women from doing the job that they WANT to do. Now, in our very brief research of high profile sports, we are now left with Moto GP, who will still have grid girls in 2018, NFL, who still have cheerleaders, boxing, which has ring girls, and professional cycling, both men’s and women’s unbelievably……...we still have podium girls.
