A behind the scenes video as photographer Phil Jones explores the beauty and softness which can be created through the art of Shibari with use of ropes.
‘Beau-Ties’ features two practising Shibari artists, Anna Noctuelle and Sauvage_x during a photoshoot with commercial photographer Phil Jones and Make-up Artist Grace Gray.
In Japanese, “Shibari” simply means ‘to tie’. Its origins lie in the Edo period of Japan during which the Samurai would use rope for capture and restraint of criminals, a martial art called Hojo-jutsu (art of restraint).
In the late 1800’s a new form of erotic Hoju-jutsu ‘bondage’ evolved and these days “Japanese rope bondage” is often associated with pornographic imagery. However, many are drawn to the ancient art form through the visually intricate patterns, aesthetics and sensations which can be created with rope tying.
‘Beau-Ties’ features two practising Shibari artists, Anna Noctuelle and Sauvage_x who are both extremely well versed in the art of Shibari. The inspiration behind this shoot was to create gentle and delicate images. Japanese rope tying is often associated with pain and dominance, we hoped to portray the other side which is tranquil, restful and elegant.
