Schwann cells dedifferentiate to a progenitor-like state following nerve injury. Clements et al. found that dedifferentiation is further modulated by the microenvironment. Within the bridge, TGFβ reprograms Schwann cells to invasive mesenchymal cells and cross-talks with Eph signalling to drive nerve repair.
