One of China's best-known contemporary classical composer was in Shanghai over the weekend for a performance of his latest composition, "The Tears of Nature". Performed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the concerto also featured Austrian percussionist Martin Grubinger.
The concerto is divided into three movements inspired by a trio of natural disasters. The first movement, Threat of Nature, was prompted by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake that killed nearly 70,000 people in Sichuan Province. Martin Grubinger depicted the piece using the timpani, showing both the gentle and explosive power of nature.
