(6 May 1980) Pope John Paul II's African pilgrimage continued with a visit on Wednesday (6 May) to Kenya. Singing children, native dance groups, and a military honour guard enlivened the pope's airport welcoming ceremonies. After kissing the ground upon arrival the Pontiff was greeted by Kenya's President Daniel Arap Moi, senior government officials, and the diplomatic corps.
Later the pontiff rode in a lengthy motorcade into Nairobi, where he addressed some three hundred thousand people in the city's freedom park, exhorting the Catholics of the continent to adhere to the church's strictures on abortion, sterilisation, and - an especially sensitive topic to Africans - polygamy
