Sustainable Forestry
Hesse State Forest Enterprise
The Hesse State Forest Enterprise (Hessen-Forst), situated in Kassel manages a good 80% of all of Hesse's forests. This includes state forests as well as forests owned privately or by corporations. The main principle guiding the management of Hesse's forests is sustainability. In order to maintain a forest's diversity, only a limited amount of wood may be harvested each year, and never more than could grow back in that year. Sustainability can be compared to a savings account where you might want to withdraw the interest paid on your savings but you never touch the initial capital. As a result of such environmentally sound forest management, Hesse's available wood supply has steadily increased over the last decades.
