The Suryanelli case in Kerala was that a 16-year-old girl was sexually harassed and assaulted continuously by 40 days by several persons in 1996. The special court sentenced 35 persons to RI for varying terms in the case and later the Kerala high court acquitted the convicted. In the meantime government employed the victim girl in the sales tax department. Now after 16 years, police arrested the Suryanelli victim girl on February 6, 2012 in connection with an alleged financial irregularity in the sales tax department at Changanassery, Kerala, where she was working. The case pertains to the charge that the victim had engaged in multiple financial irregularities while working in the Sales Tax Department, Changanacherry in 2010. The irregularities had surfaced during auditing, after which she was placed under suspension. Later she was given a 'punishment' transfer to Kottayam. It has been alleged that as her case is coming up for hearing in the Supreme Court, vested interests were trying to torture her.
