Its a very efficient way to get in a lot of welding practice and uses very little metal compared to other Tee joints, or laps. Think about building up a worn area on a shaft, or hardfacing teeth on heavy earth moving equipment, or stacking beads on a horizontal pipe joint. All of these tasks use the same skill acquired padding beads. In this video, I started out by welding a border bead using 6013 rod. The border beads provides a straight line to follow to try to stack each subsequent bead on. the objective is to run straight beads that are overlapped half way over the previous bead. If you do it correctly, there will not be any valleys or excessive lumps.
