Only until somewhat recently, many up and coming engineers have been referring to multitrack files as "stems" and vice versa.
This has created a lot of confusion for studio owners when it comes time to properly prep files for collaboration.
We live in a time where there's a lot of collaboration going on and usually across multiple DAWs. This requires the proper preparation of standard .WAV or .AIFF files.
It can be a major bummer when an engineer takes a bunch of time to prep stems (which is what the artist is asking for) when in reality, what they really want are the raw tracks.
