Jays can mimic the sounds of other creatures. At our home in Shelton, Washington, USA, we have one Steller's Jay that mimics the sound of a Red-tailed Hawk. In two instances, we have seen the Steller's Jay making the hawk sound while a Douglas Squirrel is at the bird feeder--perhaps in a conscious attempt to scare away the squirrel. The jay also mimics another sound, which we have not been able to identify, after the hawk call.
