The Tunnel Hill State Trail is a great place for seeing southern Illinois wildlife from deer to turtles, snakes to squirrles and even bobcat. How rugged in this trail? Tunnel Hill State Trail is mostly made up of crushed limestone with very slight elevations. The trail is wide enough for bike/pedestrian traffic on both sides. There are some road crossings, unprotected railroad crossings and bridges. 2. How long is this trail and is it a loop? 45 miles - however, there are plenty of trailheads in between if you wish to shorten the ride. 3. Are there signs or blazes along this trail? No. The trail is very easy to follow and does not require signage. 4. Any suggestions? Bring plenty of water as many rest stops may not have water availble. The trail is open from dawn to dusk.
