It was reported late last month that Kimberley-based coaches Deon Carney and his assistant Joe Molale were informed by the Griquas Rugby Union that they will no longer be coaching Griquas’ Academy schools side in 2018 due to their loyalty to the All Blacks The Reasoning behind SA supporters supporting the All Blacks: a long and often bitter history of rugby in what was the Cape Province, coupled, in the later apartheid years, with the particular relationship of New Zealand with the non-racial South African Rugby Union (SARU). This body, with a history dating from the 1890s, retained a non-racial constitution in contrast to the “whites only” SA Rugby Board (SARB). Outside of New Zealand itself, one of the largest contingents of All Black rugby supporters is to be found in the Eastern and Western Cape. A Griquas coach who lost his job because he was a fan of the All Blacks has been reinstated in his position.
