Shawnee National Forest Trail 049 - Part 2 - Hiking with Shawn

Hiking the Shawnee National Forest Trail 049 starting from East Trigg Trailhead. Shawnee National Forest Trail 049 takes you through Millstone Lake area, Jackson Falls and Jackson Hollow. The correct name is East Trigg Trailhead per the US Forest Service) Shawnee National Forest Trail 049 Q & A: 1. How rugged in this trail? Trail 049 is moderately difficult. There are creek crossings, hills, down trees on the trail to manage and steep climbs. The trail is used heavily by horseback riders so expect many areas to be muddy. 2. How long is Trail 049 and is it a loop? The loop starts after to hike down from the Tin Whistle (tunnel under railroad tracks). Altogether, the hike will be about 12-15 miles long. 3. Are there signs or blazes along this trail? There are white diamond blazes with '149' written on them. It is advisable to bring a map of the area. You can purchase paper maps from Friends of the Shawnee National Forest. 4. Any suggestions? Bring plenty of water and a snack. Make sure you spray yourself and your gear for ticks and mosquitoes. Poison ivy and venomous snakes occur in the area. Stay on the trail at all times. Yield for horseback riders while speaking in a calm voice so that they horse knows that you are a human. Jackson Falls can be the trickiest part of navigating this trail which is why I suggest a map.
