In this video, I got my hands on a sweet little piece if discount electronics designed to interface with a vehicle's built-in OBD-II computer interface. I did this using Windows 7 and the built in Serial-to-USB drivers (downloaded and installed by Windows 7 automatically). ScanTool.Net is GNU licensed, Open Source software that is free to the public. It is designed to read diagnostic information (trouble code and sensor data) from generic OBD-II hardware interfaces.
THE SYSTEM:
* Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
(There should be no problems working on 64 bit hardware.)
THE SETTINGS:
* Re-configure the Serial-to-USB device to COM 1 (Device Manager)
* Verify the COM port of the ELM interface is set to COM 1 (ScanTool.net)
* Verify the COM port of the ELM interface is configured on the highest baud rate (ScanTool.net)
* Set your system colors to 16-bit
STILL NOT WORKING?
* Re-verify the settings above (are they not saving?)
* Disable your Areo screen effects (Windows 7) and set to a "Classic" windows theme.
* Unplug all other devices.
* Is the ELM light on? If not, plug into a different USB port. Maybe your car needs to be running before the OBD port communicates propperly? (Again, I'm NOT a mechanic... this is your call.)
* Have you RECENTLY tried any other scanner tool on your vehicle? It's possible the OBD port itself is bad or has a loose connection. Have you tried your ELM on a different vehicle?
NOTE that I don't recommend any of these products... I am just listing something that may or may not be of use to you. If you try it and it works, please let us know in the comments. Thanks!
