Salvador da Bahia: Feeling Brazil's Rhythm

Create & Inspire 2014 is an initiative to discover talented young artists in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and the UK. 12 artists were chosen to take part in the creative journey of a lifetime to Brazil. Salvador da Bahia was the first colonial capital of Brazil, and is now the centre of Afro-Brazilian culture. There the team visited the Candeal community where they took part in a percussion workshop at the Pracatum Music School. Following the workshop, the team had the chance to explore Salvador's historic centre, Pelourinho; an area rich in historical monuments dating from the 17th through to the 19th centuries that sprawl the cobble-stoned streets. During their time in Bahia, the team also travelled to the riverside town of Cachoeira, where they learnt the basics of capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. The initiative is supported by Art Jameel and Qatar Museums, and is part of Qatar Brazil 2014 Year of Culture.
