With the support of our donors and partners, The Conservation Fund acquired of more than 12,000 acres of a privately owned ranch in southeast Texas, known as Sabine Ranch. In doing so, we helped preserve extensive wetlands and coastal prairie, save threatened and endangered species, and create new opportunities for public recreation, including hunting, fishing, hiking and bird-watching.
Without action by The Conservation Fund, Sabine Ranch would have been sold for non-conservation purposes and subdivided, fragmenting the wetlands and continuing to limit public admission for years to come. This past April, we transferred the first phase of the property, more than 8,100 acres, to the adjacent McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge.
