This Sunday's 19th Annual Tony Roper Memorial means more to veteran area racer Donald Cloyd than just a race. It means good memories and helps honor a very close friend. Last season when it was announced that Lebanon Midway was going to host the Tony Roper Memorial, Donald Cloyd was one of the 1st to say Thank you for keeping this going. Roper had never raced at Lebanon Midway and the current facility had decided to drop the Memorial Race. Cloyd, a long time friend of Tony Roper had raced against his friend and neighbor, had went up and down the road as Tony chased his dream in the world of Stock Car Racing and had helped him in many different ways. "The Roper name in Southwest Missouri Racing means a lot. A lot of history, a lot of stories and a lot of wins and leadership. Tony was a very smart racer. He seemed to know the limits of the car for the situation of the race day. he would have made a great crew chief as he knew the race car like the back of his hand. Good equipment, middle pack equipment, it didn't matter as he got the best of the car without pushing the limits and wrecking the car and normally would bring it home in 1 piece. Don had helped Tony on weekends when he went ASA Racing traveling all over the Mid-West against some of the best in the world on short-tracks and the world of Nascar. Based out of Fair Grove, it was not uncommon for several friends to help him out when chasing that dream. Last year when The Cash Money Series went to Midway for The Event, it was a packed house and during opening ceremonies you could feel the atmosphere with a positive attitude and the respect given by drivers and fans both. Tony went in the record books for being one of the last winners on The Springfield Fairgrounds Speedway's last race in 1987 along with Larry Phillips. Cloyd was right behind the winner Roper as the 2 friends were leaving nothing on the table in The IMCA Modified Main that evening. I think my car was fastest, but Tony was leaving nothing on the table. He gave me plenty of room, but it was meant for him to get that win. He was smooth on both Dirt and Asphalt. Donald Cloyd felt the positive atmosphere last year and had a great run going during the 30 lap Main. To say he wanted it is an understatement. This year he hopes to take the win home to Fair Grove. He is currently tied with Darren Darrin Crisler for 6th in the Malvern Bank Cash Money Dirt Late Model Series going into this weekend's action. The 19th Annual Tony Roper Memorial will be held At The Lebanon Midway Speedway Sunday Evening with Racing slated at 7:30 start time. A special Malvern Bank Cash Money Late Model only Autograph session is slated on track during the intermission break. Action will include track point events for The USRA B Modifieds paying 500 to win and 50 to start, plus Pure Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Hornets and The Kidz Cruisers.
