Rusky Ed here and this lesson is all about the Ural Federal District. Inspect the focus words while the intro song plays and then we’ll get on with the lesson!
The Ural Federal District is comprised of six federal subjects which are located along the length of the Ural Range. From south to north they include:
Chelyabinsk Oblast
Kurgan Oblast
Tyumen Oblast
Sverdlovsk Oblast
Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (Yugra)
Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug
The Ural Mountains extend from the Arctic Ocean to northwestern Kazakhstan, covering about 1600 miles along the way. The Ural Range has been heavily mined since the 1700s and has rich deposits of metal ores, coal, and a wide variety of gemstones.
It should be noted that in Russian the Ural Federal District translates as Ура́льский федера́льный о́круг and Ural Mountains translates to Ура́льские го́ры. The highest point in the Ural Range is Mount Narodnaya (or Гора Народная in Russian) and the Ural Federal District is home to about twelve million people. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the administrative center of the district is the city of Yekaterinburg, located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast.
And now for the focus words:
богатство - wealth, riches
невероятный - improbable, unbelievable, incredible
находиться - to be found, to be located
вдоль - along
животное - animal
множество - multitude
Next up we have a few sample sentences showing the focus words in action:
Невероятные минеральные богатства находятся на Уральском хребте.
(Incredible mineral wealth is found in the Ural Range.)
Also:
Весь Горный Урал населён множеством животных.
Вдоль Уральского хребта живёт множество животных.
(Many animals live throughout the Ural Range.)
Moving along we have an interesting story about a mysterious event which happened during the winter of 1959 which is commonly referred to as the Dyatlov Pass incident. Basically what happened was nine ski trekkers wound up camping on an isolated mountain pass while on an extended ski trip and something occurred which resulted in their deaths. What exactly happened remains a mystery, but various theories have been proposed attributing their demise to such things as aliens, yetis, angry natives, secret Soviet death rays, some kind of vortex, sonic disturbances, or possibly even accidental ingestion of a hallucinogenic substance, perhaps as the result of the consumption of ergot-tainted rye, for instance. Officially their deaths have been attributed to an unknown compelling force. Countless investigations have been done and various documentaries have been made about the incident, but what actually transpired that fateful night remains a mystery.
So, now it is time for a few review words:
озадачить - to baffle
поход - hike
полвека - half century
перевал - mountain pass
опасный - dangerous, perilous
опытный - experienced
And now we get to a few sample sentences showing these words in action:
Они разбили лагерь на опасном горном перевале.
(They camped on the dangerous mountain pass.)
Девять опытных российских лыжников погибли от необъяснимых причин.
(Nine experienced Russian hikers died of inexplicable causes.)
История озадачила весь мир более чем на полвека.
(The story has baffled the world for more than a half century.)
Нет рационального объяснения этого инцидента.
(There is no rational explanation for the incident.)
Они ушли в поход в лес.
(They went on a hike in the woods.)
But wait, there’s more. Not only did they go on a hike, but...
Они ушли в поход в лес, с тех пор их никто не видел.
or...
Они ушли в поход в лес, больше их никто не видел.
(They went on a hike in the woods, never to be seen again.)
And that’s it for this lesson…
