A European team monitoring the lifting of the embargo against the former Yugoslavia made their final report at the Western European
Union (WEU) mission in Calafat, Romania on Tuesday (28/11). The
Italian head of the WEU mission, Col. Vincenzo Basso, told the team there had been 6,328 checks along the Danube, uncovering 422 incidents violating the embargo. Delegation leader Pablo Gomez de Olea said their visit was to make a final report and an assessment of the mission's future role. The WEU mission on the Danube is made up of 253 officers from 10 West European countries. It intercepted barges and arrested petrol smugglers during the time the embargo was in effect.
