The 80's zombie horror B-films inspired video game based first Resident Evil movie was kind of decent. Too bad the moment they decided to turn characters into The Matrix-esque superheroes, the survival horror aspect was gone, and the future of the franchise was cemented in the trash category for good.
What really hit the right note for me though was the music, done by Marilyn Manson, Marco Beltrami & Kevin Manthei (Beltrami's shadow composer at the time). The excellent blending of different approaches to the horror music genre was so compelling to me that, in 2002, I went to see this mediocre film 7 times at the theatres just to hear the music again, which is easily a record for me. As if I knew that an official release of the instrumental score will never see the light of day. And lo and behold, ever since there has only been a couple of bootlegs besides the officially released four Manson-tracks, and even those are lacking plenty of the actual music heard in the film (such as the moody track here in this video, save for the "tense moment" between Milla Jovovich and James Purefoy). For long I've been considering to upload the available pieces that I managed to acquire, but it just bothers me that so much of the stuff is missing. You can stick your "Inspired by" song collection album to some place else.
I think the composers could probably never agree on which cue should be credited to who, their work became so intertwined during production and in the end result. Also, Marco Beltrami might have found it hard to accept that a musically unschooled Marilyn Manson's score was favoured by the producers to his own work, every time the two of them handed in compositions competitively. Thus, in the end, he was not that much interested in pushing a future release into motion.
List of known tracks composed by Marilyn Manson (together with Tim Sköld):
"Resident Evil Main Title"*
"Airborne" - beginning of outbreak & Kaplan begging the others to leave him behind,
"Red Queen" - hologram scene, the music replaces the corresponding section of Beltrami's own take "Red Queen Chamber",
"Combat"** - probably the panicky guitar riff when Rain gets bitten,
"Cleansing"* - shoot-out & falling victim to zombies (& halon) early on,
"The Queen Explains The Needs" - rebooted,
"Reunion"* - utility tunnel fight,
"The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts"** - Alice knows the cure and is suspected to be the traitor,
"Suppressing Early Signs Of Infection"** - clock is ticking for Rain,
"Seizure Of Power"* (film edit) - commandos overrun / showdown with the Licker/Hunter,
"Necrosis"** - Matt running out of time (Beltrami's own take "Mama Mia!"("Bye Matt") is cut off after just a few seconds of play in favour of this),
"The Dead Walk" - finale (Beltrami's own take "White Room" is cut off after just a few seconds of play in favour of this),
*officially released
**not 100%, but a good guess which scene it plays in
Other music used:
Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg) - "Supplementary Soundscapes" - written for the sequence where the characters are crawling on top of some pipes; briefly reused for the scenery of the escaping train,
Nine Inch Nails - "Fist Fuck" - edited for the zombie dogs scene (Manthei's own take was rejected because it sounded too much like game music),
Spineshank - "Cyanide 2600" (instrumental) - plays when Spence is finally recollecting (once again, Manthei's original version did not cut it),
Apollo 440 - "Wall Of Death" - the dilemma and urge of surviving through killing an infected mate,
And some other Beltrami/Manthei cues unavailable for the public outside of the film's + featurette's audio tracks.
